Genetically Modified Organism

An organism whose genetic characteristics have been altered by the insertion of a modified gene or a gene from another organism using the techniques of genetic engineering. An example of a genetically modified organism is a tomato. Tomatoes are modified in order to increase its time before it ripens.

Cambium

Cambium is a cellular plant tissue from which phloem, xylem, or cork grows by division, resulting (in woody plants) in secondary thickening. An example is a 

pine tree. These were the pine trees surrounding Lake Tahoe when I went on

 my summer vacation this year.

Fermentation

Fermentation is defined as Any of a group of chemical reactions induced by living or nonliving ferments that split complex organic compounds into relatively simple substances. An example of fermentation is wine. The process of winemaking includes the process of fermentation. Yeasts interact with the sugars of the grape juice in order to create ethanol for the wine.

K-Strategist

K-Strategist species are more known as competitors that occupy a more stable environment. The characteristics of these species include being larger, living longer lives, being strong and energy efficient, mature slowly, and have smaller amounts of offspring. My family are K-Strategists!

Introduced Species

Introduced species is also known as a non-native species, is a species of plants or animals living outside its native home or range. An example is this palm tree found in my front yard. Palm trees are native to other places such as africa and the Amazon rain forest. You can see palm trees all over Las Vegas. Palm trees are not native to Las Vegas.

Pollen

Pollen can be found on the roses of my neighbor’s rose plant. Pollen is a yellow powdery substance that is discharged from a male flower that contains gametes that can fertilize a female ovule of a flower. 

Epithelial Tissue

Epithelial tissue is a membranous tissue that covers organs and internal surfaces. Our skin is an example of epithelial tissue. It has many purposes such as serving as a barrier for our body from the outside environment.
